Fl Studio: Programming Trap Drums and Hi-Hat Rolls

Fl StudioTry it →Watch full video →Mix Elite | FL Studio Tips ·

Demo summary

The instructor builds a trap drum loop, demonstrating kick and snare placement, hi-hat rolls using the graph editor, and swapping samples from the browser.

Step-by-step

  1. Create a new pattern by clicking the Plus icon or scrolling up in the pattern selector
  2. Place the patterns into the Playlist view and duplicate them to reach the desired length
  3. Enable Song mode to hear multiple patterns simultaneously
  4. Right-click the Hi-Hat insert and select Fill each 2 steps to generate a basic rhythm
  5. Place snare hits on beats 3 and 7 of the sequence
  6. Add kick drum hits at the start of beats or on half-beats to establish the groove
  7. Click the pattern in the Playlist and select Make unique to create a variation without affecting the original
  8. Drag and drop new samples from the browser directly over existing channel rack buttons to swap sounds

Options

  • Clone a pattern via pattern options instead of using Make unique
  • Use claps instead of snares for a brighter, high-end focused sound
  • Exchange sounds quickly while playing by using Shift + Up/Down arrows in the browser

Watch out for

  • Do not move sample pack folders on your computer after adding them to FL Studio, or the software will lose the file path

Tips

  • Keep trap drums simple to maintain the rhythm rather than making them the highlight
  • Ensure your drum pattern is at least two bars long to avoid a repetitive, low-quality feel
  • Place sample packs in a permanent directory before dragging them into the FL Studio browser
  • Use the color-coded sections in the channel rack to identify the four beats in a bar

Highlights

simply drag and drop them into your browser super easy
