Fl Studio: Programming House Drums and Using Swing

Fl StudioTry it →Watch full video →Mix Elite | FL Studio Tips ·

Demo summary

A demonstration of creating a 'four-to-the-floor' house beat, layering claps, and applying the swing parameter to the drum pattern.

Step-by-step

  1. Open Packs, navigate to Drums, and drag a Kick, Snare, and Hi-hat into the Channel Rack.
  2. Program a 'four-to-the-floor' beat by filling every four steps with the Kick.
  3. Place a clap or snare on beats two and four.
  4. Add an open hi-hat on every offbeat.
  5. Extend the pattern to two or four bars by adding an extra kick at the end of the first bar.
  6. Layer claps or hats by adding a second sample and panning them slightly left and right.
  7. Turn up the Swing knob in the Channel Rack to approximately 40% to delay off-grid notes.
  8. Adjust note velocity or panning in the Piano Roll control section by holding Alt and scrolling.

Options

  • Hold Shift and scroll up to change the vertical placement of elements in the Channel Rack
  • Use 'Fill each 4 steps' to automate kick placement
  • Replace stock sounds with custom pack samples by dragging them over existing channels

Watch out for

  • Drum patterns should be at least two or four bars long to allow for variations.
  • Never layer kick drums; only layer claps, open hats, or percussion elements to avoid phase/mixing issues.

Tips

  • Place a percussion hit just before the next beat to create a 'popular disco effect'.
  • Layer a brighter hi-hat with a standard one to create a more interesting, exciting sound.
  • Use offbeat patterns for basslines to complement house drums.
  • Stick to note pan and note velocity in the Piano Roll as they are the most useful parameters.

Highlights

we can just make a simple variation like this... definitely adds a little bit of excitement
