Fl Studio: Sidechain Compression Setup

Demo summary
The instructor demonstrates setting up sidechain compression between the kick and the bass using Fruity Limiter's sidechain input.
Step-by-step
- Select the Kick mixer track and click the arrow on the Base Group track to send the signal.
- Turn the volume knob on the new connection all the way down to avoid duplicating the audio output.
- Add a Fruity Limiter to the Base Group and switch it to Compressor mode.
- Right-click the Sidechain selector in the limiter and select the Kick signal.
- Set the Ratio to approximately 4:1 and lower the Threshold until the bass ducks when the kick hits.
- Create a new dedicated 'Sidechain' mixer track to act as a group for multiple elements.
- Route all desired background elements and bass layers to this new Sidechain group track.
- Move the sidechain compressor to the new group track to affect all routed elements simultaneously.
Options
- Apply sidechaining to individual layers or to a collective group track
- Include melodic elements like Arps, Strings, and Plucks in the sidechain group for extra punch
Watch out for
- Sending the kick signal to the base group will double the kick volume unless you manually turn the send volume knob down.
- The kick audio must be enabled in its original group (e.g., Drum Group) for the signal to be processed.
Tips
- Aim for an attenuation of about 7 to 10 dB for a balanced ducking effect.
- Use a dedicated sidechain group track to ensure sub-bass and kick frequencies do not clash.
- Avoid sidechaining impact elements like brass or crashes to maintain their initial hit strength.
