Fl Studio: Programming drum patterns in the Channel Rack

Demo summary
The instructor demonstrates how to route sounds to the mixer, fill high hat steps, and program a 'Tresillo' rhythm for a trap beat.
Step-by-step
- Left-click and highlight all sounds on the left side of the Channel Rack
- Press Ctrl+L to route the selected sounds to the Mixer
- Drag Pattern 4 from the left side into the Playlist under Song Mode
- Double-click the pattern in the Playlist to open it for editing
- Right-click the Hi-Hat and select 'Fill each 2 steps'
- Place the snare on the 3 and 7 beats
- Program the 'Tresillo' rhythm for the kick drum by placing hits on the 1, the 4, and the 7
Options
- Move the Tresillo pattern around to be more creative
Watch out for
- You must switch to Song Mode to see the pattern in the Playlist
- FL Studio can be difficult to judge for pattern length, necessitating the use of the right-click fill shortcut
Tips
- Use 'Fill each 2 steps' on high hats to create your own metronome to build around
- Memorize the Tresillo pattern (3-3-2) as it is the foundation for most genres including Trap, Afrobeat, and Reggaeton
- Route sounds to the mixer early so you can apply saturation and distortion
Highlights
“that's the only pattern you need to memorize it creates all the genres”
