Fl Studio: Programming 808s and adjusting envelopes

Demo summary

The instructor demonstrates setting up an 808 with 'Cut Itself' enabled and adjusting the ADSR envelope so the note stops exactly when the MIDI note ends.

Step-by-step

  1. Drag an 808 sample into the sampler.
  2. Reset the sample settings by right-clicking and selecting Reset or using Alt + Left Click.
  3. Ensure 'Keep loop points' is turned off.
  4. Right-click the sound and select 'Cut itself' to prevent overlapping notes.
  5. Paste your melody MIDI into the 808 piano roll and shift it down to match any previous transpositions.
  6. Click the Envelope tab in the sampler and activate the envelope.
  7. Turn all envelope settings down except for 'Hold' to ensure the note stops when the MIDI note ends.
  8. Press Control + L in the piano roll to legato the notes if you want them to join up.

Options

  • Change the scale highlighting to match your transposed key.
  • Move notes up an octave if they sound too low (typically below G4).

Watch out for

  • If you transposed your melody (e.g., down 100 cents), you must transpose your 808 MIDI by the same amount to stay in key.

Tips

  • Follow the root notes of your chords when programming the 808.
  • Keep 808 patterns around the C5 range; notes around G4 or lower often sound too muddy or low.
  • Adjust the envelope so you have more control over the exact duration of the bass notes.

Highlights

that's a really simple and common eight we pattern you can follow
