Melody and Bassline Creation with Vital

Demo summary
Demonstrating how to use the Vital synthesizer to record a melody via a typing keyboard and creating a matching baseline by following root notes.
Step-by-step
- Open the Vital piano roll to write a melody over existing chords.
- Right-click the 'Typing keyboard to piano keyboard' button.
- Select the scale and key that matches your project (e.g., C# Minor Harmonic).
- Arm the record button and set it to 'Notes' only.
- Enable the countdown and record your melody using the typing keyboard.
- Use Alt+V to toggle 'Ghost Channels' to see chord notes from other tracks as a guide.
- Use the Paint tool to draw a rhythm first, then drag notes vertically to change pitches.
- Go to Tools > Dump score log to selected pattern to recover unrecorded MIDI performances.
Options
- Adjust preset sounds quickly using the macros on the left of the Vital interface.
- Choose between improvising live, following ghost notes, or drawing random rhythms first.
- Use Ctrl+Scroll to zoom in or out of the dumped MIDI score.
Watch out for
- The 'rhythm first' technique can result in random, non-musical flows compared to intentional improvisation.
- Ensure the typing keyboard layout exactly matches your project scale or notes will be out of key.
Tips
- Start your melody on the root note of the track (Z, A, Q, or 1 on the typing keyboard).
- Avoid keeping the rhythm the same throughout; ensure every bar has a slightly different rhythmic pattern.
- Use the 'Question and Answer' technique: repeat a motif for three bars and change it on the fourth bar.
- Adjust one note at a time rather than starting over to avoid frustration.
- If notes sound off, move them to align with the 'Ghost Notes' of your chords.
