Fl Studio: Creating Automation Clips

Demo summary

The instructor demonstrates how to automate an EQ high-cut filter and reverb wetness over time in the Playlist.

Step-by-step

  1. Apply an EQ or effect to a mixer track.
  2. Identify the specific knob or fader you wish to automate.
  3. Right-click the knob and select 'Create automation clip', or go to Tools > Last tweaked > Create automation clip.
  4. Locate the clip in the Playlist and move it to the desired track.
  5. Right-click on the automation line to create new points.
  6. Drag points up or down to set the parameter value, or left and right to set the timing.
  7. Extend the automation clip to the beginning of the song to ensure the initial state is correctly set.

Options

  • Create automation via the 'Last tweaked' parameter in the Tools menu
  • Enable 'Detached' mode on plugins to view the effect movement while editing the Playlist
  • Adjust the steepness or resonance of EQ bands before automating

Watch out for

  • Automation clips may not apply correctly before their start point due to specific FL Studio settings; you must extend the clip to the start of the song as a workaround.

Tips

  • Automate the high-cut filter from bottom to top to create movement before a drop.
  • Automate the 'Wet' fader on a Reverb plugin to create a 'wash out' effect.
  • Set the automation to finish or reset exactly when the drop hits for maximum impact.
