Klaviyo: Building a Multi-Step Welcome Series Flow

Demo summary

Constructing a 7-email welcome sequence with specific time delays and content angles like brand story, bestsellers, and social proof.

Step-by-step

  1. Click Create Flow
  2. Select the Welcome Series template from the available variations
  3. Select the trigger list (e.g., Newsletter)
  4. Click Create Flow to enter the builder
  5. Add Profile Filters to exclude users who have placed an order, started a checkout, or added to cart since starting the flow
  6. Set Email 1 to deliver the promised discount code immediately
  7. Add a 1-day time delay after Email 1
  8. Configure Email 2 to focus on the Brand Story or a message from the founder
  9. Add another 1-day time delay and configure Email 3 to showcase Bestsellers

Options

  • Choose from template variations like SMS discount, unique discount with reminder, or customer vs. non-customer
  • Exclude 'Active on Site' or 'Viewed Product' users if you want to avoid overlap with browse abandonment flows

Watch out for

  • You must select a trigger list before the flow can be created
  • The default Klaviyo time delays (3-4 days) are often too long for an effective welcome sequence

Tips

  • Use profile filters to stop the flow if someone buys; they should move to a post-purchase flow instead of receiving more welcome emails
  • Exclude 'Added to Cart' or 'Started Checkout' users to prevent them from receiving both welcome and abandonment emails simultaneously
  • Include a reminder of the discount code in every single email of the series
  • Focus Email 2 on building trust through your mission or what sets you apart from competitors
  • Keep the sequence tight by sending the first three emails one day apart to maintain engagement

Highlights

we're going to use like the default flows of claure just to show you what's like essential for your e-commerce brand
