Klaviyo: Setting up a Site Abandonment Flow

Demo summary

Creating a flow triggered by 'Active on Site' to target visitors who browse the home page but don't view specific products.

Step-by-step

  1. Click Create Flow and select Create from Scratch
  2. Name the flow Site Abandonment
  3. Select Active on Site as the trigger
  4. Add Profile Filters to exclude users who have Viewed Product, Added to Cart, Checkout Started, or Placed Order zero times since starting the flow
  5. Add a Time Delay component after the trigger
  6. Add an Email component and name it Site Abandonment Email 1
  7. Turn off Smart Sending and enable UTM tracking

Options

  • Set time delay between 1 to 4 hours
  • Use Trigger Filters to limit events to specific product dimensions (though not recommended for this specific flow)

Watch out for

  • Klaviyo does not have a default template for Site Abandonment; it must be built manually
  • You must have the user's email address already to retarget them via this flow
  • Profile filters are required to ensure users don't receive both Site Abandonment and Browse Abandonment emails simultaneously

Tips

  • Use this flow to act as a 'shop assistant' by guiding users toward collections since they haven't viewed a specific product yet
  • A/B test a 1-hour delay versus a 4-hour delay to see what converts best for your specific audience
  • Wait longer to send emails for top-of-funnel flows (like site abandonment) compared to bottom-of-funnel flows (like checkout abandonment)
  • Limit this specific flow to just one email since the users are very early in the customer journey

Highlights

it is an important flow but it is a flow that a lot of ecommerce brands are missing out on probably due to the fact that there is no default flow from Klaviyo
