Fl Studio: Layering melodies with Ghost Channels

Demo summary

The instructor uses the Flex plugin to add a violin counter-melody, utilizing 'Ghost Channels' to see the original piano notes for reference.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the Channel Rack and add a new instance of Flex.
  2. Select 'Essential Strings' and choose the 'Violin Sustain' preset.
  3. Right-click the instrument and select 'Piano Roll' or press F7.
  4. Go to the View menu and ensure 'Ghost Channels' is selected to see the original piano notes.
  5. Draw in a counter-melody by clicking notes that align with or emphasize the ghosted notes.
  6. Adjust the snap settings by clicking the magnet icon and selecting 'Line' or 'Half Step'.
  7. Highlight a note and press Ctrl + Q to quantize it to the grid.

Options

  • Use 'Sustain' for long notes or 'Staccato' for short notes.
  • Change snap grid density to Quarter, Half Step, or Line depending on zoom level.
  • Emphasize existing notes from the previous melody or create a new counter-melody.

Tips

  • Add breaks in the melody rather than having notes play all the way through to keep it simple.
  • Use the grid lines to help snap notes into the correct timing.
  • Quantizing is a quick way to clean up notes that are slightly off the start of the beat.
