Adobe Audition: Green screen removal with Ultra Key

Demo summary

The instructor demonstrates using the Ultra Key effect and eyedropper tool to remove a green screen and composite nature footage behind a door.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the Effect Controls panel or press Shift + 7.
  2. Search for 'Ultra Key' in the Video Effects > Keying folder and drag it onto the clip.
  3. Select the eyedropper icon in the Ultra Key settings and click the green color in the Program Monitor.
  4. Adjust the 'Choke' slider under Matte Cleanup to remove green edges.
  5. Move the door footage to a higher track on the timeline and place the nature footage underneath it.
  6. Select the nature clips, right-click, and select 'Nest' to group them.
  7. Click the stopwatch icon next to 'Scale' in Effect Controls to set a keyframe.
  8. Adjust the scale values at different points in the timeline to match the zoom of the door footage.

Options

  • Access effects by manually twirling down folders or using the search bar.
  • Use the Q key to ripple trim the beginning of a clip.

Watch out for

  • The background footage must be placed on a track physically below the keyed footage in the timeline to be visible.
  • If the top clip is zooming, the bottom clips will remain static unless you manually keyframe their scale to match.

Tips

  • Use the arrow keys to move frame-by-frame to identify specific lighting or trim issues.
  • Increase the scale of the background footage (e.g., to 60) to ensure no black edges are visible when a door or frame opens.
  • Nesting multiple background clips makes it easier to apply a single scale animation across all of them.

Highlights

kind of a cool way to learn the basics of Premier Pro... this is just a quick little fun exercise
