Adobe Firefly: Apply transitions and use the Slip Tool

Demo summary
The video demonstrates applying Cross Dissolve transitions and using the Slip Tool (Y) to adjust clip timing without changing its position.
Step-by-step
- Open the Effects panel and navigate to Video Transitions > Dissolve.
- Drag the Cross Dissolve effect onto the cut between two clips on the timeline.
- Select the Slip Tool (shortcut Y) to adjust the start point of a clip without moving its position if a white triangle indicates the clip start has no handles.
- Drag the Slip Tool to the left to make the video start later, allowing room for the transition.
- Select all clips and press Shift + D to apply the default transition to all cuts simultaneously.
- Right-click any transition in the Effects panel and select 'Set Selected as Default Transition' to change the Shift + D behavior.
- Click and drag the edges of a transition on the timeline to adjust its duration.
- Select the Type Tool and click on the Program Monitor to add text overlays.
Options
- Press Q to delete everything before the playhead to create transition handles (note: this shortens the clip).
- Use the Slip Tool (Y) to create handles without changing clip duration or position.
- Apply transitions individually by dragging or in bulk using Shift + D.
Watch out for
- A small white triangle on a clip indicates it is at its absolute start or end; you cannot extend a transition over this point without trimming or slipping the footage first.
- Shift + D applies transitions to the very beginning and end of the sequence, which may require manual deletion if not desired.
Tips
- Use the Slip Tool to start the video later without actually moving the clip on the timeline.
- Keep Cross Dissolve as your default transition if it is your most frequently used effect.
- Lengthen transitions by dragging their edges to make the blend feel smoother or shorter for a quicker pace.
