Adobe Firefly: Basic timeline editing and clip trimming

Demo summary

The demo shows importing media, creating a sequence, and using the Ripple Delete and Q/W shortcuts to trim clips on the timeline.

Step-by-step

  1. Double-click the media folder to view footage and sound effects.
  2. Drag a clip onto the timeline to create a sequence.
  3. Go to Sequence > Sequence Settings to adjust time base (FPS) or frame size.
  4. Ensure the 'Snap in Timeline' magnet icon is blue to snap clips together.
  5. Select clips and right-click 'Unlink' to separate video from audio tracks.
  6. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) keys to zoom in and out of the timeline.
  7. Drag the end of a clip to the playhead to manually trim its duration.
  8. Right-click a gap between clips and select 'Ripple Delete' to close the space.
  9. Press 'W' to delete all footage after the playhead on a clip and ripple the following clips.
  10. Press 'Q' to delete all footage before the playhead on a clip.

Options

  • Change time base (FPS) in sequence settings.
  • Adjust video frame size (e.g., 1920 x 1080 HD).
  • Modify video preview file formats or codecs to improve playback performance.
  • Utilize multiple video tracks (V1, V2, V3) by dragging clips vertically.

Watch out for

  • If the 'Snap in Timeline' icon is not blue, clips will not automatically snap together.
  • Unlinking is required before you can delete audio tracks independently of their video.

Tips

  • Keep your footage at the same frame rate throughout the project for the best results.
  • Use 24 frames per second for a realistic, cinematic look with motion blur.
  • Use 30 frames per second or higher for a very crisp, smooth look.
  • Set your color space to Rec 709.
  • Use the Q and W keyboard shortcuts at all times to speed up your editing workflow.

Highlights

q and w are great shortcuts that you need to know and need to use in your workflow at pretty much all times
