Klaviyo: Creating Abandoned Cart and Checkout flows

Demo summary

Shows the setup of an Abandoned Cart flow using the 'Added to Cart' trigger and cloning it to create an Abandoned Checkout flow with the 'Checkout Started' trigger.

Step-by-step

  1. Go to Flows in the left menu and click Create Flow
  2. Search for 'cart' and select the Abandoned Cart template
  3. Set flow filters to 'Checkout Started zero times since starting this flow', 'Placed Order zero times since starting this flow', and 'Has not been in this flow in the last 30 days'
  4. Adjust the initial time delay to 30 minutes
  5. Add a Conditional Split based on 'Has placed order at least once over all time'
  6. Clone the completed Abandoned Cart flow to create the Abandoned Checkout flow
  7. Change the trigger of the cloned flow to 'Checkout Started'
  8. Remove the 'Checkout Started zero times' filter from the Abandoned Checkout flow

Options

  • Use the Shopify 'Added to Cart' trigger if your store is linked to Shopify
  • Include SMS steps within the flow
  • A/B test the initial wait time between 15 minutes and 1 hour

Watch out for

  • If using a Shopify store, you must use the specific Shopify 'Add to Cart' trigger rather than the basic manual one
  • When cloning for Abandoned Checkout, you must remove the 'Checkout Started zero times' filter or the flow will not trigger correctly

Tips

  • Set the initial wait time to 15-30 minutes; the default 4 hours is usually too long
  • The closer a customer is to purchasing, the sooner you should send the first email
  • Avoid using discounts for returning customers in the split, or offer a lower discount than what is sent to first-time buyers
