After Effects: Creating a Gradient Ramp background

Demo summary

The instructor creates a new Solid layer and applies the Gradient Ramp effect, customizing the start and end colors to create a red-to-black background.

Step-by-step

  1. Right-click in the timeline and select New > Solid
  2. Name the solid 'background' and click OK
  3. Open the Effects & Presets panel and search for 'Gradient Ramp'
  4. Drag the Gradient Ramp effect onto the solid layer
  5. Change the Start Color to red and the End Color to black
  6. Adjust the 'Start of Ramp' and 'End of Ramp' anchor points to position the gradient

Options

  • Set the solid to any initial color as the effect will override it
  • Manually drag the ramp control points in the composition window

Watch out for

  • Ensure the solid is the same size as the composition

Tips

  • Rename your solid layers to keep the project organized
