Preserve Illustrator gradients in After Effects

Demo summary
The video demonstrates how to convert Illustrator vector layers into After Effects shapes while preserving linear and radial gradients, including new controls for scaling and rotating gradients.
Step-by-step
- Right-click the Illustrator vector layer in the timeline
- Select Create Shapes from Vector Layer
- Open the shape group and locate the Merge Paths and empty Path layers
- Delete the extra paths to clean up the layer structure
- Adjust the Start Point and End Point handles to position the gradient
- Use the Scale and Rotate properties within the gradient options to animate or adjust the fill
Options
- Apply gradients to either fills or strokes
- Preserve both linear and radial gradients during conversion
Watch out for
- Conversion generates extra empty paths and merge path operators for positioning that may clutter the layer
Tips
- Delete the extra merge paths and empty paths to keep your shape layers as clean as possible
- Use the new Scale and Rotate controls to animate gradients without setting up complex expressions for start and end points
