Izotope Rx: Removing applause transients with Spectral Repair

Demo summary

The demonstrator uses the paintbrush tool and spectral repair to manually remove handclaps from a recording by targeting the transients in the spectrogram.

Step-by-step

  1. Highlight the specific claps in the spectrogram using the selection tools.
  2. Apply De-click to remove the initial attack of the applause transients.
  3. Select the Paintbrush tool for more surgical frequency selection.
  4. Use Spectral Repair on the remaining room sound and artifacts.
  5. Break the processing into frequency bands by targeting the top and then the bottom of the selection.
  6. Render the changes to the audio file.

Options

  • Use the Paintbrush tool for Photoshop-like manual selection
  • Use Shift+P as a shortcut for Spectral Repair
  • Apply Spectral Repair multiple times for better results

Watch out for

  • Do not highlight the entire audio file for De-click as it destroys the audio quality.
  • Over-processing can remove necessary speech sounds, such as the 'nd' in 'round'.

Tips

  • Highlight the problem like a surgeon rather than selecting large chunks of audio.
  • Address the initial attack with De-click before moving to Spectral Repair.
  • Process the audio in separate frequency bands (top then bottom) to maintain natural sound.

Highlights

you could get even more surgical with it
