Adobe Express: Advanced noise reduction and gating

Demo summary
Mike demonstrates capturing a noise print and applying the Noise Reduction process followed by a Dynamics Auto Gate to clean up background noise in a podcast recording.
Step-by-step
- Press Shift + D to switch to the spectral view to identify low-end background noise and glitches
- Highlight a section of the audio containing only the background noise
- Go to Effects > Noise Reduction / Restoration > Capture Noise Print
- Select the entire audio track
- Go to Effects > Noise Reduction / Restoration > Noise Reduction (process)
- Adjust the frequency graph to target low-end frequencies and set the reduction level
- Go to Effects > Amplitude and Compression > Dynamics
- Enable only the Auto Gate option, set the threshold to approximately -45 dB, and click Apply
Options
- Use Adobe Enhance Speech as an automated alternative
- Adjust the noise reduction graph to target specific frequency ranges (low, mid, or high)
Watch out for
- You must capture a noise print before the Noise Reduction process can be applied
Tips
- Manual noise reduction can often achieve better results with less processing on the voice than AI tools
- Set the noise reduction level to around 44 dB for a balance between noise removal and voice quality
- Focus noise reduction on the low end of the frequency graph to avoid destroying the voice
- Use a noise gate after noise reduction to ensure complete silence in the spaces between speech
