Project setup and settings in DaVinci Resolve

Step-by-step

  1. Open DaVinci Resolve and click Create to start a new project.
  2. Select the Edit tab at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Click the gear icon in the bottom right to open Project Settings.
  4. Adjust the Timeline resolution to match your footage dimensions.
  5. Set the Timeline frame rate to match your footage.
  6. Navigate to Optimized Media and Render Cache.
  7. Change the format from ProRes 422 HQ to H.264.
  8. Click Save to apply your preferences.

Options

  • Select 3840x2160 for 4K footage
  • Select 1920x1080 for HD footage
  • Manually enter custom dimensions if your resolution is not listed

Watch out for

  • You must check your file properties in Finder under 'Dimensions' if you are unsure of your footage resolution.

Tips

  • If you are unsure of your footage frame rate, set the timeline to 30.
  • Changing the render cache to H.264 is recommended to make editing with lower resolution proxies much faster.
