Step-by-step

Select the clip you want to trim in the timeline.
Scrub the playhead to the point where you want the cut to occur.
Press Command/Control + Shift + [ to perform a Ripple Edit Left, deleting everything back to the previous cut and closing the gap.
Press Command/Control + Shift + ] to perform a Ripple Edit Right, deleting everything from the playhead to the next cut or end of the clip.
