Non-destructive sample editing in REAPER

ReaperTry it →Watch full video →The REAPER Blog ·

Demo summary

The presenter demonstrates the new 'Take sample edits' feature, zooming in to manually redraw individual sample points with a pencil tool to fix audio glitches.

Step-by-step

  1. Right-click the audio item and navigate to Take > Take envelope > Take sample edits
  2. Zoom in until the mouse cursor changes to a pencil shape over sample points
  3. Click and drag individual sample points to change their values
  4. Hold Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) while clicking a point to return it to its original position
  5. Hold Alt + Shift to bring a sample point to the center line to mute it
  6. Right-click a point or the line to access the context menu for batch actions like scaling or clearing edits

Options

  • Delete sample edits in a specific time selection
  • Set sample values to a straight line in a time selection
  • Scale sample values in a time selection to expand or compress edits around the center point
  • Clear edits for a single channel or all channels
  • Customize mouse modifiers under the 'Sample edit' context in settings

Watch out for

  • Sample points are only editable when you are zoomed in sufficiently
  • Edits are independent for left and right channels in multi-channel files
  • To open the short menu, you must right-click on the line or a point, not the empty space between them

Tips

  • Use this feature to fix clicks and pops by evening out the very first sample of a recording
  • Use it to take the 'spiky edge' off of harsh audio glitches
  • Use the 'set to zero' function in a time selection to effectively mute a specific tiny area

Highlights

Pretty cool stuff.
