Reaper: Removing audio clicks with sample editing

Demo summary

A practical demonstration of using the sample edit tool to silence a sharp click in a noise recording by dragging sample values to zero.

Step-by-step

  1. Identify the sharp click or thump in the waveform
  2. Zoom in closely to the individual sample level
  3. Select the sample points causing the click
  4. Drag the sample values down to the zero line to silence them
  5. Smooth out any discontinuities in the waveform by redrawing adjacent points

Options

  • Keep the low end of the waveform while only removing the high-frequency click at the end

Watch out for

  • Editing at the sample level can be difficult to keep the desired area centered on the screen while zoomed in

Tips

  • Smooth out discontinuities after silencing a click to prevent new artifacts
  • Be prepared to draw many individual points, as there are 48,000 samples per second

Highlights

that didn't take very much time at all, and we've completely gotten rid of that thump
