Cubase 15: Design drum sounds with the Drum Machine and Synth

Demo summary

The creator demonstrates building a custom drum kit by loading synthesized kick and snare modules, tuning them to specific notes, and applying built-in effects like bitcrushing and reverb.

Step-by-step

  1. Add a new track and select Drum from the track types.
  2. Choose Pattern Event instead of MIDI part and click Add Track.
  3. Select an empty pad in the drum rack.
  4. Click Kick or Snare to load a synthesized drum module into the slot.
  5. Adjust the Tuning feature to set the drum to a specific musical note.
  6. Modify synthesis parameters such as Click, Color, Tone, and Amp Envelope Decay.
  7. Apply per-pad effects using the dedicated Delay and Reverb units.
  8. Navigate to Pad Effects to add Bitcrusher, Distortion, Filter, or EQ.

Options

  • Choose between multiple panes of racks for sample or synth placement
  • Toggle between different oscillator types for snare synthesis
  • Adjust distortion levels for aggressive or gritty textures
  • Apply bitcrushing for a transformer-style sound

Tips

  • Use the tuning feature to ensure your kick and snare are in the same key as your track.
  • Be careful when applying distortion as it can significantly increase the volume level.
  • Use the bitcrusher to add character and 'attitude' to your drum sounds.

Highlights

I love it because it looks so similar to Ableton Live setup with the drum racks... these drum synth pieces really do have a nice sound to them.
