Cubase 15: Generate patterns with the Melodic Sequencer

Demo summary

A walkthrough of the new Melodic Sequencer in Cubase 15, showing how to randomize patterns, adjust density and octaves, and switch between monophonic and polyphonic modes.

Step-by-step

  1. Select a portion of the track and double-click to create a pattern event.
  2. Select 'Melodic' in the lower section of the interface.
  3. Set the desired key and scale.
  4. Adjust the sliders for ties, repeats, and jumps.
  5. Click the dice icon to randomize a pattern.
  6. Click the plus button to create and store additional pattern variations.
  7. Adjust the 'Density' and 'Variation' sliders to change the complexity of the randomization.
  8. Drag the range markers (e.g., C1 to C4) to expand the note range for the generator.
  9. Toggle the funnel icon to show only the tiles currently in use.

Options

  • Switch between 'Shapes' or 'Randomize' modes
  • Switch between Monophonic and Polyphonic modes
  • Adjust note octaves or semitones manually after generation

Watch out for

  • You must select 'Melodic' rather than 'Drums' in the lower section to access the melodic sequencer

Tips

  • Use the plus button to save multiple versions of a pattern so you can compare different randomizations
  • Increase the 'Variation' slider to a high setting before pressing randomize for more unpredictable results
  • Expand the note range markers to add more vertical range to the generated patterns

Highlights

I find this one is way more organized, intuitive, and just makes sense with how it's set up.
