After Effects: Generating procedural fire with Fractal Noise

Demo summary

The instructor demonstrates combining Fractal Noise, Gradient Ramp, and Tritone effects to create an animated fire texture.

Step-by-step

  1. Set the Fractal Noise type to Dynamic Twist.
  2. Increase Contrast to approximately 200 and decrease Brightness to -20.
  3. Keyframe the Evolution property from 0 to 1 full rotation across the timeline.
  4. Apply the Gradient Ramp effect and drag it above the Fractal Noise effect in the stack.
  5. Change the Fractal Noise blending mode from Normal to Screen.
  6. Apply the Tritone effect and set Highlights to #F4F6B7 and Midtones to #F45B52.
  7. Apply CC Sphere and increase the Radius to wrap the texture into a sphere.

Options

  • Reorder effects to change how the Tritone interacts with the Gradient Ramp and Fractal Noise.

Watch out for

  • The order of effects in the stack matters significantly for the final render.
  • Gradient Ramp renders over everything else unless the effect below it has a blending mode set to Screen or similar.

Tips

  • Use the built-in blending mode at the bottom of the Fractal Noise effect to composite it with other layers.
  • Combine procedural noise with CC Sphere to create a 'fire planet' look.

Highlights

All of that with just a handful effects on one layer.
