Step-by-step

  1. Add a Color Corrector node to the node tree and push the tint toward blue while reducing saturation.
  2. Copy and paste the original Media In node to create a new layer for light sources.
  3. Add a Merge node to place the original footage over the blue-tinted composite.
  4. Connect an Ellipse mask to the blue input of the Merge node to isolate specific light areas.
  5. Adjust the Ellipse size and increase the Soft Edge to simulate light emission.
  6. Add a Fast Noise node for fog, adjusting detail and scale.
  7. Drag the output of the Fast Noise node onto the output of the previous node to automatically create a Merge node.
  8. Lower the Blend slider on the fog's Merge node to reduce opacity.

Options

  • Perform basic color grading in the Color page instead of Fusion.
  • Copy and paste existing masks to create multiple light sources.
  • Use a Polygon mask instead of an Ellipse for custom fog shapes.

Watch out for

  • When copying and pasting masks, they must be run through each other to combine their effects.

Tips

  • If you get lost in a complex node tree, drag individual nodes into the left viewer to review the composite step-by-step.
  • Adding bright yellow light masks is the key to making a day-for-night shot look realistic.
  • Set the fog blend to around 20% (0.2) to keep the effect subtle rather than overpowering.
