Midjourney: Using Image Prompts and Weights

Demo summary

Demonstrates dragging an image into the prompt bar to use as a structural reference and adjusting its influence with the --iw parameter.

Step-by-step

  1. Drag an image into the prompt bar
  2. Select the image prompt icon (the little picture)
  3. Type your text prompt after the image reference
  4. Add the parameter --iw followed by a number to adjust image influence
  5. Press Enter to generate the image

Options

  • Hold shift and click other reference types to use the same image for multiple roles
  • Use multiple image references simultaneously
  • Run a permutation test by listing multiple weights (e.g., .25, .5, 1, 2, 3)

Watch out for

  • Image weight range is 0 to 3 for Version 6
  • Image weight range is 0 to 2 for Version 5

Tips

  • Use weights below 1 if you want the text prompt to have more influence over the style
  • Higher weights (like 2) will make the output favor the image characteristics over the text prompt
  • Try using an image reference with a simple one-word prompt like 'wizard' to see how the composition carries over

Highlights

all you have to do is drag an image in
