Reduce background noise in Audacity

Demo summary

A two-step demonstration showing how to capture a noise profile from a silent section and then apply the Noise Reduction effect with specific sensitivity and smoothing settings.

Step-by-step

  1. Select a section of the audio that contains only background noise with no speaking.
  2. Go to Effect, then Noise Removal and Repair, and select Noise Reduction.
  3. Click Get Noise Profile.
  4. Select the entire track by double-clicking.
  5. Open the Noise Reduction effect again.
  6. Configure the Noise Reduction (dB), Sensitivity, and Frequency Smoothing Bands settings.
  7. Click OK to apply the effect.

Options

  • Select a noise sample from any part of the audio track.
  • Increase Noise Reduction up to 12 dB if the noise floor requires it.

Watch out for

  • The noise reduction amount should not exceed 12 dB to avoid noticeable harshness.
  • High sensitivity settings make the audio sound thinner and harsher.
  • If you need more than 12 dB of reduction to reach a -60 dB noise floor, your recording setup is likely the issue.

Tips

  • Use a setting of 6 for all three sliders (Noise Reduction, Sensitivity, and Smoothing) for standard voice recordings.
  • Calculate the required reduction by measuring the distance between your current noise floor and -60 dB.
  • Listen to the results through good headphones rather than laptop speakers to detect if the audio has become too thin.
  • Use Frequency Smoothing Bands to fill small gaps in audio data left behind by the reduction process.
