Adobe Express: Vocal EQ with Parametric Equalizer

Demo summary

A detailed walkthrough of using the Parametric Equalizer to apply high-pass filters and boost specific frequencies for clearer vocals.

Step-by-step

  1. Select the Filter and EQ setting in the effects panel
  2. Add the Parametric Equalizer effect
  3. Double-click the effect to open the visual waveform interface
  4. Apply a high-pass filter to cut low-end frequencies between 60 Hz and 100 Hz
  5. Apply a similar cut on the high-end side around 1,700 Hz
  6. Drag the high-end indicator to approximately 8,000 Hz and raise it to add brightness
  7. Select band number two to lower muddy low-end frequencies
  8. Adjust the influence width (Q factor) to determine how narrow or wide the frequency cut is

Watch out for

  • Do not cut out too much of the low-end frequencies or you will eliminate the deep parts of the voice
  • Avoid raising high-end frequencies too far or the audio will sound unnatural

Tips

  • Aim for around 70 Hz to 75 Hz for the high-pass filter as these frequencies are typically not heard in most voices
  • Widen the influence of a band to affect more frequencies in a range, or narrow it to target a specific small portion
  • Adjust your settings based on the specific microphone and room used, as every situation requires different EQing
  • Think of EQing as a 'dance' where you tweak and balance different bands until the audio sounds right

Highlights

it's kind of a dance to get your EQ sounding better and you're going to do something a little bit different each time
