The instructor demonstrates advanced editing techniques including closing gaps with Shift+Delete and using Ripple Edit Left/Right shortcuts to quickly remove footage and shift the timeline.

Step-by-step

  1. Press Command+B (Mac) or Control+B (Windows) to blade through clips at the playback indicator.
  2. Select a gap in the timeline and press Shift+Delete to close it.
  3. Position the playback indicator at the desired start point of a clip.
  4. Press Command+Shift+[ (Mac) or Control+Shift+[ (Windows) to perform a Ripple Edit Left, removing footage back to the previous cut.
  5. Position the playback indicator at the desired end point of a clip.
  6. Press Command+Shift+] (Mac) or Control+Shift+] (Windows) to perform a Ripple Edit Right, removing footage forward to the next cut.

Options

  • Manually drag the edge of a clip to adjust the start point.
  • Manually move clips back to fill gaps.

Watch out for

  • Standard trimming may leave gaps in the timeline depending on your current selection settings.

Tips

  • Use Ripple Edit functionality as the fastest way to edit down footage.
  • Keep gaps in the timeline temporarily if you need creative freedom to experiment or bring other assets down later.
  • Use these shortcuts to quickly remove bad takes and mistakes so you are only left with the 'good stuff'.

Highlights

the fastest way I think to edit down your footage is to use the ripple edit functionality
