Darken background with masking and keyframes in CapCut

Demo summary

The creator demonstrates how to isolate a subject using auto-removal and apply a feathered gradient mask to a black background layer to create depth.

Step-by-step

  1. Go to Media, then Library, and drag the black background still onto the timeline above your video
  2. Increase the size of the black background until it fills the frame
  3. Hold Alt and drag your original video layer above the black background
  4. Select the top video layer, go to Video, then Remove Background, and select Auto Removal
  5. Select the black background layer, go to Video Mask, and select the Split option
  6. Drag the feather option to 100 points
  7. Go to the beginning of the timeline and click the Add Keyframe icon in the mask settings
  8. Move forward on the timeline, add another keyframe, and drag the mask line to the top of the frame

Watch out for

  • The black background must be placed between the original video and the duplicated subject layer

Tips

  • Use the 'no time' black background in the trending library because it functions as a still image
  • Use this gradient darken effect to create depth for placing graphics and text behind your subject
