Using Style References in Midjourney

Demo summary

The demonstrator uploads vintage posters and applies them as style references (using the paperclip icon) to influence the aesthetic of a simple 'giraffe' prompt.

Step-by-step

  1. Click the image icon in the prompt bar to upload your reference images
  2. Drag the desired image into the prompt area
  3. Click the paperclip icon on the image to set it as a style reference
  4. Type a simple subject noun into the prompt bar
  5. Press enter to generate the images

Options

  • Use the picture icon to set the image as an image prompt
  • Use the user icon to set the image as a character reference

Tips

  • Start with the most basic prompt possible (just a noun) to see how Midjourney interprets the style reference before adding more detail
  • Avoid specifying medium or lighting in the initial prompt to better understand the style reference's influence

Highlights

we're starting at the most basic possible level because I like to see how mid journey is interpreting things
