DaVinci Resolve: Build a custom transition in Fusion

Demo summary

A step-by-step walkthrough of using an adjustment clip and a transform node in Fusion to create a custom eased transition.

Step-by-step

  1. Drag an adjustment clip from the Effects panel onto the timeline between two clips
  2. Cut the adjustment layer to cover approximately nine frames on each side of the cut
  3. Select the adjustment layer and open the Fusion panel
  4. Press Shift + Spacebar, type 'transform', and add a transform node
  5. Set four keyframes: two at the start/end and two in the middle (frames 8 and 10)
  6. Adjust the Y value to 1 on frame 8 and back to 0 on frame 10
  7. Change the 'Edges' setting to 'Duplicate' in the transform node
  8. Open the spline panel, select all keyframes, and press 'S' to ease the movement

Watch out for

  • You must change the edge setting to 'Duplicate' to avoid black borders during movement

Tips

  • Cutting the adjustment layer to nine frames on each side is considered the 'sweet spot'
  • Use the spline panel to ease keyframes for a 'buttery smooth' result

Highlights

And there it is, your first custom transition.
