Adobe Lightroom: Configuring Assisted Culling in Lightroom

Demo summary

A demonstration of Lightroom's early access Assisted Culling feature, showing sliders for subject focus, eye focus, and eye openness.

Step-by-step

  1. Navigate to the Library module in Lightroom
  2. Click on Assisted Culling
  3. Toggle on Subject Focus, Eye Focus, or Eyes Open based on your criteria
  4. Adjust the sharpness sliders for Subject Focus and Eye Focus to set the stringency level
  5. Enable 'Reject photos without people's eyes' to filter out test shots or empty frames
  6. Select 'Reject all misfires' to remove black frames or accidental shots
  7. Toggle 'Exposure issues' to automatically reject over or underexposed images
  8. Click View to see the resulting selects and rejects

Options

  • Adjust sliders from 'Soft' to 'Sharp' (0 to 100)
  • Reject documents and receipts
  • Reject images where eye openness cannot be determined

Watch out for

  • The feature is currently in early access
  • Setting the Eye Focus slider to 100 may be too stringent and reject a high volume of images

Tips

  • For headshots, set Eye Focus near 100 to ensure maximum sharpness
  • Avoid redundancy by selecting either Eye Focus or Subject Focus rather than both
  • Keep 'Eyes Open' unchecked for candid shoots where people might be squinting or looking at each other
  • Watch the real-time count of selects and rejects while moving sliders to find the right balance
  • Be cautious with rejecting exposure issues if you prefer to salvage them manually in post-processing

Highlights

it is kind of cool to see how many images it's going to reject in real time as we move some of these sliders around
